The Importance of Head Protection
Head protection is vital for your long-term health and safety. It can protect you from struck-by incidents, impact with fixed objects or electrical hazards. It’s mandatory for a number of occupations including construction workers, carpenters, electricians, linemen, plumbers, pipe fitters and loggers.
In some cases, specific industries may require different types of head protection based on the risks encountered. Struck-by incidents from falling small tools or materials are common in the construction industry and are best addressed with a hard hat. Working at height or near energized equipment is typical in the wind energy, electric power distribution and telecommunications industries where climbing helmets and full brim hard hats are popular PPE options.
All hard hats must meet minimum standards for PPE in general outlined by CSA standard Z94.1-15 (R2020), Industrial protective headwear – performance, selection, care and use. The ANSI classification of the helmet is noted inside the shell and indicates the level of impact protection offered.
How to Choose the Right Head Protection for Work and Sports
Some helmets and caps can be modified with attachment systems for hearing protection and face shields. However, these additions should be tested to ensure they don’t reduce the head protector’s original degree of protection or have a negative effect on balance and comfort. Also, it is important to inspect the suspension system regularly for signs of wear or damage. A damaged suspension snaps instead of stretching to absorb an impact and may offer less protection to the worker. Inspecting interior cushioning for compression or abrasion is another important step to take before using head protection on the job.
